Fly Fishing Video Games List
Fly fishing video games are hard to come by. Even though hundreds of fishing games are available today, only a handful have a fly fishing component. Even fewer games are dedicated to fly fishing exclusively.
Fortunately, we’re living in an era of indie and niche game creation, so there are a few fly fishing games to choose from. So, if you want to scratch your fly fishing itch with a video game, keep reading for a list of the greatest fly fishing simulators!
Ultimate Fishing Simulator
This game is devoted to all forms of fishing and has an absurdly large scope (in a good way). In addition to all the other fishing stuff, it has a well-developed fly fishing section.
Fly fishing is a very diverse sport. You’re not confined to traditional dry flies. Nymphs, streamers, and classic wet flies are also included in the game. This is exactly the type of fly fishing simulator I’m searching for as a streamer aficionado.
Strip retrieves are supported in this game for those who are streamer crazy (like me!). Other games on this list include streams, but they don’t implement strip stripping and this one.
You’re also not confined to classic fly-fishing targets (trout and salmon); you can target a wide range of freshwater and freshwater species on the fly. However, one that excites me the most is the fact that striped bass may be caught on the fly in this game!
That is my opinion. On this list, this is the greatest overall fly fishing simulator. Casting, retrieving, and fighting the fish are all extremely realistically recreated. The variety of content is also difficult to match.
Casting, bottom fishing, and ice fishing are all included in the game. However, ice fishing is a different type of fishing that isn’t often seen in fishing games. Thus this was a pleasant surprise!
The Ultimate Fishing Simulator is available on Steam for Windows.
Fly Fishing Simulator HD is a high-definition simulation of fly fishing.
This is a mobile game, unlike the others on the list. This is the game to play if you’re seeking a fly fishing game to play on your phone.
Thankfully, the creator avoided the use of in-game purchases. Instead, there are two versions: a free one and a paid one (with much more content). The game’s developer has personally visited, photographed, and fished the in-game areas.
Match the hatch is the central game mechanic, which is similar to real-life fly fishing.
I’m completely honest. I used the free edition to gather information for this article, but I purchased the full version the same night! So I’m completely sucked in.
Selection of Flies
You may “check hatches,” which will display a photo of the bugs present with your fly pick. Then you choose the pattern that you believe will best replicate the insects on the water at the time.
It doesn’t end there; each pattern has a variety of sizes from which to choose. An Adams, for example, comes in eight sizes, ranging from a small midge-like size 22 to a hefty size 8. In the lesson, the developer is gracious enough to point out that smaller numbers equal larger flies, which is something that someone who isn’t experienced with fly fishing in real life might not recognize.
You’re not confined to just the starter flies, either. You’ll earn more flies as you continue through the game by capturing more fish (up to 160 distinct patterns!). You’re not limited to merely dry flies in this game. Streamers and nymphs are also available.
After that, you can pick the best fly to match the hatch and get fishing!
The way the fly line flows on the water and how to fly line management was shown in general, struck me greatly.
The amount of line that is let out is controlled separately from casting the rod, allowing for a surprising level of line control. The controls are also fluid and simple in several ways!
Setting the hook and fighting the fish are both simple tasks. Set the hook, drawback on the rod (while making sure there is no excess line out). Although battling the fish is done using the reel, I imagine it would be tough to fight the fish in the usual fly fishing fashion.
Additional Views on Fly Fishing Simulator
Overall, it’s a good fly fishing game made by someone who knows what they’re doing. There’s even a feature for tying flies! I never expected to see a game with a fly-tying component.
Both the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store have it available for download. Both phones and tablets can be used to play this game.
Far Cry 5 is the fifth installment in the Far Cry series.
Farcry 5 is a surprisingly competent fly fishing simulator, even though it isn’t a dedicated fishing game. What’s even more incredible is that fishing is only a minor component of a much broader game! The primary game is an open-world first-person shooter set in Montanna, which just so happens to be a state with a lot of fly fishing!
For those that fly fish in the real world. Be advised that, while the fishing mechanics are entertaining, the fly fishing vocabulary may improve. If the developers had spent an hour examining the final product with someone who flies fish, they could have given the language in this game a good finishing polish. But I’m picky; the actual gameplay is a lot of fun!
It is possible to capture a range of various fish species. The majority of the fish are common fly-fishing targets, including trout, salmon, and char. However, there are some truly bizarre fish to be caught, such as paddlefish!
Species List (12 different types of fish)
- Arctic Grayling
- Bull Trout
- Golden Trout
- Lake Trout
- Rainbow Trout
- Kokanee Salmon
- Chinook Salmon
- Pallid Sturgeon
- Rock Bass
- Smallmouth Bass
- Largemouth Bass
FarCry 5 is available from Steam on PC, XBOX, and Playstation 5.
Fishing on the Fly
This is an independent game, and the creator is a real-life fly fishing guide. This indicates that a great deal of first-hand experience went into the creation of this game. The rivers are modeled by real-life rivers, and they have structure that matches this.
In a hatch system, the fisherman must match the hatch, much like in real life. The hatches change with the seasons, which is extremely cool!
This game is in early access, so be aware of that. The game’s fundamental gameplay and features are well-developed, although the visuals are a little rough around the edges. The developer is aware of this and is presently working to improve it.
Even local wildlife was thrown in for good measure by the developer. As you explore the waters in Fishing on the Fly, you’ll see bears, buffaloes, and wolves.
Fishing on the Fly is a Windows game that can be downloaded via Steam.
