You can’t weigh your fish without a scale. If there is one thing I have learned about angling over time, it is that “educated guesses” tend to grow with every telling.

Although I have known people who can accurately assess bass weights to within a few ounces by looking, they are rarer than 10 pounders. An accurate scale is essential for all of us, and any organization that certifies records.

What should you look out for on a fish scale? Do you prefer an analog or digital scale? Is it a hook or a gripper, Are the more expensive options worth it? How will the cheaper scales perform?

These questions are important to us, so please continue reading!

We’ll be taking a closer look at the top options, discussing their strengths and weaknesses, as well as offering our recommendations for top choices.

Here’s a quick look at the top fish scales currently on the market:

Best Fish Scale Reviewed

Accu-Cull Digital Scale With Mini Grip

Accu Cull ACUDSMG Digital Scale w/Mini Grip

Accu-Cull is a little-known but popular scale that’s not quite as well-known as the Berkley. We think that you will be just as impressed by this little deal as we are.

Accu-Cull has a bright, easily-read, backlit display. The Accu-Cull shuts off automatically after 50 seconds. However, the weight of the last fish will not change unless you reset it using the reset button. It is accurate enough to weigh up to 55 pounds according to anglers. A retractable 38-inch tape measuring device is available, just in case.

It is not intended for tournaments so don’t expect fancy memory features.

It also comes with the Mini-Grip, which is one of our favorite grippers to use with a digital scale. The Mini-Grip gripper is rugged, strong, and secure. This combination is a great deal for the price. It’s also a good choice for tournament anglers.

This product is truly a success in real-world usage. The screen and scale have been discussed, now let’s talk about durability. Expect bomb-proof performance from the included Mini Grip and the unit itself. Rapala should have made a product that is as water-resistant and durable as possible, as anglers have tested this product in all weather conditions, including rain, wet, and humidity.

Two AAA batteries are required to provide reasonable battery life.

Pros

  • Very durable
  • It is simple to use
  • Backlit, clear screen
  • Amazing maximum weight
  • 1 oz. 1 oz.
  • It’s affordable
  • Includes a Mini-Grip

Cons

  • Average battery life

Eastaboga Tackle Analog Scale

Boga Grip 130 30lb Scale

Eastaboga’s analog scale, known as the “Boga” among angling cognoscenti, is the Cadillac of analog scales. Its high-end price tag matches its performance and it is the standard against which all other scales should compare.

The Boga comes in two weights, 15- and 30-pounds. The attached grippers lock in place with vice-like efficiency, an audible click, and an internal spring concealed by the metal exterior. The Boga measures weight in one-pound increments. This is not the best way to scale 100th of pound tournaments. However, the Internal Game Fishing Association can certify these scales. They are well-known for their accuracy in half-pound increments.

A rotating grip protects the mouth of large fish when they struggle to eat during weight. This may not seem important, but it is crucial when you have a 20-pound fish that needs to be released.

The Boga is built to withstand saltwater for years. Seriously. You’ll be amazed when you lift this scale-up.

Its legendary durability means you can count on it to last you a lifetime!

Yes, there are imitations, such as Entsport, which is highly regarded. Be careful! These knockoffs don’t have a rotating grip which can cause many fish to be injured. They also don’t weigh accurately.

This is the best analog fish scale.

Pros

  • Strong!
  • Amazingly accurate
  • Top-notch grippers
  • Amazing handle and top materials

Cons

  • It’s expensive!

KastKing Digital Fishing Scale

KastKing Water Resistant Digital Fishing Scale with Ruler, Dual Mode - Pounds/Ounces & Kilograms, Zero-110 LBs/50 Kg, Light, Strong ABS Frame, Non-Slip Handle, Retractable 38 inch Tape Measure

KastKing’s digital scale is a great option for those looking for a reliable and affordable solution.

Although most digital scales claim water resistance, this one is more than just marketing hype. Users have reported that the scale has sunk without any problems and that it can withstand rain, splashes, and high humidity. This is a great product for a low price.

The KastKing is a simple hook that can be used to catch fish. We recommend adding a gripper for this scale. This will make the process easier for you and your catch. Although it comes with a retractable 38-inch tape measure, it is not made to last. It’s more of an accessory than a functional tool, at least according to our experience.

The heart of the scale is “all-go and no show”, and it has a simple, clear, backlit read-out with three buttons to activate its various functions. One of the features is a memory function, which can store up to nine different weights. You can also zero it so that the attached gripper doesn’t add any extra weight to your catch. This is a nice addition and worth considering.

Amazingly, the scale can measure one ounce or 1/10th of a pound up to 110 pounds. Users have found it to be accurate to within a few grams across a wide range of weights. The lack of a 100ths function can pose a problem for tournament anglers.

It also has two AAA batteries, which provide a reasonable amount of battery life.

Pros

  • Very durable
  • It is simple to use
  • Backlit, clear screen
  • Amazing maximum weight
  • 1 oz. In increments
  • Memory function
  • It’s affordable

Cons

  • Average battery life
  • A gripper is required
  • Recording weights in 100ths is not possible

Rapala High-Contrast Digital Scale

Rapala RHCDS50 Digital Scale High Contrast, Black, 50 lbs.

Rapala understands that not everyone anglers fish tournaments. They have you covered. The digital high-contrast scale, which is an excellent alternative to the tournament model, offers great functionality at a very affordable price.

This scale’s LCD screen is high-contrast. It displays light images against dark backgrounds. It is easy to read and use. It can also be used to photograph your catch for trophies.

It can store up to eight weights, and it will let you know how your batteries are doing. The directional pad control is what it uses, which we all know. It can hold up to 50 pounds of bass, and it weighs in increments of one ounce as well as 100ths. This is an amazing instrument.

Also, the gripper is very useful.

This unit requires two AAA batteries to run, and they are quite durable.

Count us impressed!

Water, however, isn’t this product’s forte. It will most likely die if you take it for a quick dip. This will also reduce its useful life. Avoid rain and splashes.

Does that make it a deal-breaker for you? Although we don’t believe so, it is a weakness that’s worth looking at.

Pros

  • It is simple to use
  • Amazing light on an LCD screen with dark pixels
  • Amazing memory features
  • 1 oz. In increments
  • Battery life is excellent
  • Gripper is amazing

Cons

  • Water-resistant but not very.

Rapala Touch Screen Tourney Scale

Rapala Touch Screen Tourney Scale 15lb

Rapala has been serving the needs of serious anglers for generations. It’s no surprise that their scales are excellent. The touch-screen tournament scale from Rapala is one of the most popular digital options. It has everything you need for a competition: a gripper that’s top-notch and full function capabilities.

It was designed with bass tournaments and includes a large backlit screen that displays eight stored weights as well as a running total. This is a great feature that you will appreciate when the heat is on. You’re protected for any size bass with the 15-pound maximum (it is also available in a 30-pound version). It measures one-ounce increments and 100ths of an ounce.

As you would expect, this scale is accurate to a first-rate level. You won’t find official scales that weigh your totals for less than the scale.

The large touch screen makes it easy to use. With added features like a battery indicator, you can rely on its reliability even when you have bigger concerns.

Although the attached gripper is strong, you don’t have to worry about fish being lost. However, some people complain that it may be too stiff.

The scale can run on up to 400 hours of battery life with two AA batteries

This is good. It’s easy for us to be impressed. However, not all things are great. The unit’s water resistance is very poor. It needs to be kept dry if you want it to last. Some users reported problems with the screen fogging from the inside due to high humidity.

Do you find this alarming? Although we don’t believe so, it is something worth considering.

Pros

  • Perfect for tournaments
  • It is simple to use
  • Backlit, clear screen
  • Amazing memory features
  • 1 oz. In increments
  • The battery life is amazing
  • Gripper is amazing

Cons

  • Water-resistant but not very.

How to Choose the Best Fishing Scale

Analog vs. Digital

It’s important to ask the obvious question: Digital or analog?

  • Digital scales are easier to read and have a feature memory that can keep track of your catch’s weight. These scales require batteries and are less durable than analog ones. Although they are generally less expensive than quality spring balances, accuracy can be affected.
  • Analog and Spring ScalesThe top-end models have a calibrated spring that weighs the weight. Analog scales can only be read mechanically. They are more durable than digital scales because they don’t require batteries and have no electronics to worry about. However, they can be harder to read than digital ones. Good analog scales can also be quite expensive. They are amazingly accurate.

Gripper vs. Hook

A lot of scales include a large hook for your fish’s lip or gill. Some fish scales come with a lip-gripper which is essentially a spring-loaded clamp designed to hold the fish at its lips without causing any harm.

Hooks are more expensive than gripper models for reasons we won’t have to explain. We think that a model with a gripper should be chosen. We recommend adding a gripper to any models that do not already have one.

Why?

First, it is possible to injure a fish that is struggling by being caught through its lip or gill. You can practice catch-and-release fishing.

Second, large hooks can make it difficult to juggle struggling fish. For some species, hooking them with a small hook in their mouth is a bad idea.

It is easy to purchase a gripper and slip it over the scale hook. If necessary, attach a length of plastic tubing so that it stays in place.

Here’s a picture of A. Jay, a regular poster at Bassresource.com, rigged up:

“Will Wetline” uses the same scale but has a different approach

Both of these gentlemen are on track. If you prefer this style of scale, do yourself a favor and add a gripper.

Our favorite? Accu-Cull Mini Grip! It is easy to use, durable and clamps down lips with authority.

Batteries

Digital scales require long battery life. You don’t want them to go out of business. Low batteries can hurt accuracy in some digital scales. It’s important to have spares and change them frequently.

Digital scales that use standard AAA or AA batteries are what we’re reviewing. Some products may use watch batteries. However, these can be expensive and difficult to find if there aren’t spares.

Accuracy

An inaccurate scale is useless.

A reliable scale must be able to accurately weigh fish after fish, season after season. However, many digital scales have issues with weighing fish under 3 pounds. Tournament fishing is a different story.

Durability and water resistance

The fishing scale should be capable of absorbing the bumps and bruises that come with outdoor life. These little incidents, from a hard knock to the gunwale to a fall on the dock should not cause it to die.

It is okay to have a sudden storm or a splash, but mechanical scales are more reliable. Our research shows that even the most advanced digital scales need to be kept dry.

This issue will be discussed in detail in each review.

Price

Cost is also important.

An expensive analog scale of the highest quality will not last forever, but it is well worth the investment.

A very affordable luggage scale, however, can take a beating but is cheap enough to buy in bulk or replace as necessary.

Our Picks: Accu-Cull Digital Scale With Mini Grip, Eastaboga Tackle Analog Scale

Accu-Cull is our top choice for a digital scale.

You would expect Accu-Cull’s electronic competition to be a disappointment. It makes up for what it lacks with high-tech wizardry in real-world performance. Accu-Cull is accurate and has measurement increments in ounces and 100ths of pounds. This makes it ideal for basic weigh-ins. Although it is not intended for tournament use and does not have fancy memory options, the Accu-Cull is extremely durable and rugged all-season. This is a great tool that’s easy to use and reads well. It also comes with the Mini-Grip at no additional cost.

For an analog scale, however, the Boga is the only serious game in town.

Although the price tag may seem high, it will be worth every penny. The Boga is a remarkable tool that delivers exceptional accuracy and long-lasting performance.
